A great example of a WW2 aluminium cigarette case made by prisoners of war from crashed aeroplane parts and other salvaged items
The front features domed mosque framed by palm trees, the back an anchor, cross and heart. Inside is a depiction of “Lili Marlen” Lili Marlene was a German love song which became popular during WW2. There is a floral design where the cigarettes are stored. These case were associated with Italian POWs and local artisans working around British-run camps in Egypt and Libya during 1942-47 and typical of wartime soldier-souvenir trench-art from the region.
