Bring a piece of authentic Japanese folk craft into your home with this vintage Creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi doll. Standing at 34cm (approximately 13.4 inches) tall, this piece beautifully merges the raw texture of nature with refined artisan skill.
The body of the doll is crafted from a natural white birch (Shirakaba) branch, purposefully leaving the papery, peeling tree bark intact to create a rustic, organic look. The smooth wooden head features a weighted bobblehead design that allows it to nod gently when touched.
The lower half of the torso is hand-painted with a stark, atmospheric winter mountain landscape, paired with vertical flowing calligraphy script. Because these creative dolls were handcrafted as individual travel souvenirs in Japan’s forested mountain regions, no two pieces are exactly alike.
Condition: Vintage. The natural birch bark shows original organic peeling, which is a deliberate characteristic of this artistic style. Painted details and face remain clear and vibrant. some cracking as shown
