About the Potter: Gretl Shapiro
This piece was handcrafted by Gretl Shapiro, an Austrian-born studio potter who arrived in the UK via the Kindertransport before establishing her workshop in Scotland. Inspired by British pottery icon Bernard Leach, Shapiro specialized in robust, functional stoneware suited for everyday use. Her terrines and tureens are celebrated for their classic mid-century shapes and rich, earthy glazes—often incorporating traditional Tenmoku or Kaki finishes. Authentic pieces feature her distinct, impressed “GS” potter’s mark.
