Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Belt Clip by Thomas Johnson I for Thornhill (London, 1876)

A true masterpiece of High Victorian luxury. This Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Belt Clip combines the legendary creative synergy between master silversmith Thomas Johnson I and the royal retail house of Walter Thornhill & Co.

Designed to slide securely over a Victorian gown’s belt or waistband, this functional art piece served as the foundational anchor for an affluent woman’s daily essentials.

Artistry & Design

The front facade features a highly detailed cast depiction of a classical winged angel cascading downward amidst organic foliate swags. The metalwork displays crisp definitions along the feathers and flowing drapery. A robust, original circular jump ring with Lion Passant, remains securely attached at the base, perfectly prepared to hold traditional chatelaine chains or individual appendages.

Condition & Patina
This piece is in great antique condition with excellent structural integrity. The tongue-style belt clip is functional and curved at the end. The silver has only been lightly polished to preserve its rich, original historic tarnish. This deep natural patina pools beautifully within the recesses of the high-relief sculpture, providing a dramatic three-dimensional contrast that modern cleaning would permanently strip away. There is a small hole at the base, it’s unclear if this is part of the design or made later.
